You Have A Choice Of Radio Automation Software

Image
When it comes to Internet radio automation software you have a choice... Do you pay out hundreds of $$$ for radio playout software or do you download a program for free? Personally I'd rather use something for FREE leaves more money to spend on studio equipment and streaming. I know from using various Forums over the years that hobby broadcasters don't always have $$$ to spend on stuff for their station. Everytime I test paid automation solutions I come to the conclusion that they don't perform that well when up against RadioDJ. DEMO versions of some radio software offerings have usage restrictions or time limits. Which means you can't test the software to its FULL POTENTIAL RadioDJ doesn't have trial periods, reg keys or online activations. I'd rather help save someone from the hell that is a paid for product with very little in the way of support, The case in point being SAM Broadcaster People pay lots of

You Don't Have To Be A Radio DJ To Use RadioDJ

Image
As you probably know by now I swear by RadioDJ free radio automation software. While RadioDJ is primarily built for use in a radio studio... You DON'T have to be a RadioDJ to use the program. I currently use Radio DJ for automating my large music collection at home. If you've converted your CD's to a digital format and you're looking for a program that is easy to use and great at automating your music collection then RadioDJ is the program you need RadioDJ supports a lot of audio codecs right out of the box. Supported Audio Codecs: *.mp3;*.ogg;*.wav;*.mp2;*.mp1;*.aiff;*.m2a;*.mpa;*.m1a;*.mpg;*.mpeg;*.bwf;*.mus;*.wma;*.wmv;*.aac;*.adts;*.mp4;*.m4a;*.m4b;*.m4p;*.mod;*.mo3;*.s3m;*.xm;*.it;*.mtm;*.umx;*.mdz;*.s3z;*.itz;*.xmz;*.flac;*.midi;*.rmi;*.kar;*.opus;*.wv;*.ape;*.apl;*.mpc;*.mpp;*.mp+;*.spx;*.tta; More file types can be added from the BASS Library https://un4seen.com/ It's not that difficult to get RadioDJ up and running. You just need to fol

7 Years and NO New Version Of Winamp?

Image
How Time Flies! Its about this time in 2013 when notices appeared on the Winamp website informing users AOL were shutting it down. As we all know Radionomy came to the rescue and bought both Winamp and Shoutcast in the January of 2014 Since then theres been a stream of releases of Shoutcast 2.x.x but apart from a (badly coded) BETA theres nothing as far as Winamp is concerned. Winamp is sadly dead. Technology marched too far forward for it to be considered useful. Radionomy it seems only bought it for the Shoutcast portion, They don't appear to care much for Winamp They say theres a Winamp 6 in the works but from what I can gather there are NO lead developers on the job. Will we ever see a new all singing all dancing Winamp 6? Who knows? AFAIK Radionomy only wanted Shoutcast when they paid $5m to AOL. November 2021: A post has appeared on the Winamp forums stating that there is a New W

Windows 10 For Free?

Image
I've been using a copy of Windows 10 Pro for a while now and I haven't paid to activate it. Yet it still functions like a normal copy of Windows. I run my copy of RadioDJ on it nearly everyday and for my needs Windows 10 does what it should. You're not supposed to be able to customise Windows 10 but there are ways around it if you know how. I've stopped a few services and used a program called WinAero to customise various bits. I've saved myself the best part of £150 by not paying for a Windows 10 Pro licence. I just hope Microsoft don't change it anytime soon, I quite like being able to use Windows 10 for free. Why in this age of digital subscriptions has Microsoft not included a hotfix that requires all unactivated copies to reboot every 2 hours? That quote was from my late Husband & he's right if you're not supposed to run an unlicensed copy of Windows 10 why haven't Microsoft blocked access to these versions? So if you'

Automatically Backup Your RadioDJ Database

Image
Did you Know: You can backup the database in RadioDJ free radio automation software? Its really easy to back up the database just set the folder you want the backups to go into. Then set an hour for it to take the backup at (24 Hour Clock) Leave the database setup tool minimised in the system tray. (Tick the box that says "Close to Tray") Thats literally all there is to backing the database up in RadioDJ. Other well known radio playout software doesn't have a database backup feature Which isn't great when it comes to restoring the SQL after a database crash.

So you've successfully installed your RadioDJ database Now you'll be wanting to import/install music tracks into the program. Transferring RadioDJ To A New Computer

Image
A couple of users of RadioDJ asked how they should go about transferring the RadioDJ settings to a new computer. F.A.Q: Are there files that I can copy and paste onto the new machine so it will have the same rotations, cue marks, events, and other settings? Moving RadioDJ to a new machine with the same settings is really easy as most of the settings are stored in the database. Just follow a few simple steps and it's easy as ABC 1) On the old machine running RadioDJ take a database backup using the database setup tool. This will backup rotations/playlists/songs/events transfer the .sql backup file onto a USB drive. Also backup the RadioDJ program folder onto the USB drive. This will preserve your plugin settings. 2) Install MariaDB on the new machine. Right click on the taskbar and select task manager & look for the service mysqld.exe or MariaDB under the services tab. Tip: Make sure you give the database the same password yo

The Most Perfect Piece Of Music Playout Software

Image
Q: Have you ever found the most perfect piece of music playout software? I've tried LOTS of music playback software over my 20 or so years on the Internet. DSH Jukebox, Foobar, Winamp, Real Player, Windows Media Player, Musicmatch, SAM Party DJ, VLC Some pieces of software were OK for playing music and some of them would crash if I tried adding a large folder of music into them. Certain software couldn't crossfade very well and I'd end up with a car crash transition betweeen songs. RadioDJ excels at crossfading, It has a better Cue Point editor than some paid for software. It was 2010 when I first used RadioDJ and I haven't looked back since. RadioDJ has been the bedrock of my music automation since I discovered it via a search. I THINK Its the most perfect piece of music playout software ever as it does what I ask of it everytime I use it.

Creating A New SQL User

Image
In case you haven't already noticed MySQL tends to allow some pretty insecure permissions by default, allowing root access from any computer. This is a big problem, especially if you have port forwarding configured on your router to your MySQL instance. However you can easily create new users using any management interface, so we'll do it with HeidiSQL 1) Launch HeidiSQL and sign in as root. 2) Select Tools>User Manager. First of all, we'll remove root access for remote hosts. There will be several accounts listed for root, from various locations. Select the root account that has just a % sign in the host column. This allows root access from any location, including on the internet and isn't recommended. On the right hand side, select the drop down and pick the local network that matches your LAN IP range (e.g. 192.168.%) This makes sure that when you're on your local network, you can still log in as root. Click save. Next we'll add a new r

Why Does RadioDJ Rely On A MySQL Database?

Image
Saw this post on a forum on a post about RadioDJ free radio automation software The biggest fail with RadioDJ to me is the reliance upon a MySQL database Q: So Why does RadioDJ rely on a MySQL database? A: RadioDJ requires a MySQL Database to run some back end functions such as events and rotations. Having an MySQL database makes programming on your website (PHP) really straight forward. You can show what’s currently playing or recently played or even take listener requests from your website. The fact RadioDJ relies on a database for some of it's functions is actually one of it's PLUS points. Some radio automation programs run with a flat file text based system and don't appear to have any form of web integration. I never hear anyone question why other well known radio playout software has 5 different database options Another PLUS with RadioDJ, You can backup your database on one machine and restore it on another m

Good Knowledge of Sam Broadcaster Pro A Must?

Image
Just seen a radio station advertising for DJ's We are looking for new podcasts, live shows and radio format shift DJs A good knowledge of Sam Broadcaster Pro a must! Yet again they expect DJ's to pay $299 for a P.O.S just so they can broadcast 3-5 hours a week. That's a lot of money for a DJ to part with especially if they're doing online radio as a hobby. I've seen other stations do this in the past they won't entertain you if you are using software such as RadioDJ Radio DJ's are supposed to be creative and they should be allowed to stream using the piece of software they want. Its not even as if SAM Broadcaster Pro is a good P.O.S it crashed and burned far to frequently for my liking. Limiting the software choices DJ's can do on your station won't work out well. It will put a lot of DJ's off applying to be on your Internet radio station. P.O.S =

RadioDJ Database Maintenance (How To Repair?)

Image
So you've successfully installed and configured the RadioDJ database. Now you have it installed its a good idea if once in a while you do some basic maintenance to ensure optimum operation. Its not that difficult to maintain and backup your RadioDJ database. A backup of your SQL database is essential in case the worst should happen to your computer. First: We'll look at the RadioDJ database backup utility. Open database setup from the setup folder select the auto backup tab and set it to backup your database at an Hour when it's convenient for you. TIP: Backup your database to a directory or drive of your choice. You can never have too many backups! The database backup happens in the background, Tick the box that says close to the system tray. Close to tray and FORGET about it. Other automation software doesn't backup the whole database whereas RadioDJ does. Next we will move onto the other part of the maintenance with HeidiSQL HeidiSQL sh

How To: Install RadioDJ FREE Radio Playout Software

Image
Installing RadioDJ the easy way... I know it can be daunting and scary installing radio automation software for the first time. Especially if you aren't used to using software that requires a database, but don't panic it's not as difficult to setup as you might think. If you follow these easy steps and have a bit of patience then you should have the program up and running in no time. Q: Can I install Radio DJ offline? A: YES: All you need to do is download the MariaDB & RadioDJ software installation files. Your computer doesn't need to be connected to the Internet for the installation. There are NO Key Codes or Activations required to unlock the benefits of the software. Virtual Audio Cables (Virtual Sound Card)

Image
Sometimes Windows Updates can do strange things to your audio and sometimes they can break your soundcard. I've had issues with Windows audio on and off for years even now trying to change sound settings I get grief and have to reboot the PC. This is where Virtual Audio can help. I don't appear to have many issues with Virtual Audio cables. I can connect RadioDJ to one of the pipelines and also connect the encoding software to that cable and I get flawless audio streaming. Update January 2022: The Breakaway Pipleline download has now been taken down It would appear that the Breakaway one Virtual Audio cables don't work well on Windows 10 after the latest feature update. They were causing my audio to cut out and stutter. Breakaway Pipline hasn't been updated since 2018. My recommendation is that you uninstall it from your computer. This is the Virtual Audio Cable I now reco

Hey Microsoft I would like Stereo Mix back!

Image
Microsoft have a nasty habit of BREAKING things when they do a major update to Windows 10. The last major update saw them break Stereo Mix in the sound card settings. I can't listen to radio streams through my browser, I can't watch YouTube videos either... I've had to install Voicemeeter and Virtual Audio Cables to get the sound from RadioDJ to play over the speakers. For some strange reason the Voicemeeter Virtual Input isn't working correctly either I presume this is to do with the Microsoft Audio issues. I really hope that Microsoft get their fingers out and fix it in the next major update. A DJ without audio you just couldn't make this up. its annoying because theres a few things I would like to be able to record from YouTube. Hey Microsoft I would like Stereo Mix back! PLEASE! P.S: YES I have already tried updating sound card drivers but that hasn't helped matters . Update 14/09/2020: I've
