SAM Broadcaster Pro How Good Is It?

Image
This was a question I saw among the stats recently. Q: SAM Broadcaster Pro how good is it? A: It's not a very good piece of software & it's not worth $299 SAM Broadcaster can be tricky for a novice to setup it gets confusing having 5 different database options on first run. Firebird being the worst of the database options which is flaky and unstable. Firebird can only hold around 50,000 tracks in its database so no good if you have a large library (100K+) of songs I installed SAM Broadcaster with the help of a software engineer We used the included Firebird server. That worked well for a few days. Then SAM wouldn't restart. I'd have to start over again. SAM fails more and more now. To the point where it crashes at least once/twice a Week. This is taking the fun out of this. We often hear users reporting crashing/buffering/activation issues with SAM Broadcaster often taking stations off air for a few days. I know from

Why Can't I Use DSP Plugins With RadioDJ 2.x.x.x

Image
Regular users of RadioDJ will know that version 1.8.2 used to support plugins made by other users. One of those Plugins written by SnowHow supported the use of certain DSP plugins within RadioDJ. When RadioDJ rolled over to version 2.x.x.x the plugin structure was changed and OLD plugins weren't supported as they had been in version 1.8.2 HOWEVER If you really neeed a DSP plugin to enhance your sound you can do it from within Sound Empire Caster Sound Empire Caster supports the use of DSP plugins and AFAICS it seemed to handle the ones I tested OK. You need to place the .dll and .xml files into the main SEC program folder and you should then have access to that DSP after a restart. They will be in the left side panel to activate a plugin hightlight the DSP you want to use and use the arrows to move it into the right side panel. I only ever hear good things from users about Sound Empire Caster. It cuts out the need fo

The Most Perfect Database Software?

Image
2021 will mark 7 years of me being a MariaDB user. I've used it alongside a few versions of RadioDJ. I'd seen someone mention in 2014 that they had found MariaDB so I went and installed it. In 7 years Maria DB hasn't let me down. I can't even remember the last time I had to fire up HeidiSQL to do maintenance to my databases. We had MariaDB powering my old website before my partner sadly passed away and I had to cancel the VPS. Even on our VPS servers MariaDB performed amazingly well compared to MySQL Community Server from Oracle. Don't get me started on the headaches I had with Oracle MySQL. I only ever need to do a bit of basic housework from time to time with MariaDB. I optimise my RadioDJ database every day by an event. I backup my database using the database setup tool that comes with RadioDJ and its been a LONG time since I had to restore from an .SQL file I've had the same Rad

10 Years Already (RadioDJ Free Radio Playout Software)

Image
Its 10 years since I first discovered RadioDJ 1.3.7.0 I discovered RadioDJ via a Google search and started tinkering with it. I found Radio DJ was easy to use from the start and once I'd configured the database and program settings it was great. I'd been looking for another piece of radio playout software because the software I was using back in 2010 wasn't much KOP for doing radio with. One of the pieces of software I used kept crashing and malfunctioning quite regularly which got on my tits. It became tiresome when I had to keep reinstalling SAM Broadcaster after a crash. I've NOT had to constantly reinstall RadioDJ and its database. I started using RadioDJ full time after SAM Broadcaster Malfunctioned on New Years Day 2011. SAM was only playing Jingles and Station ID's instead of playing Songs yet the CLOCKWHEEL rotation had more than enough files to choose from. SAM Broadcaster suffered what's known as a

Budding InternetRadio DJ?

Image
Q: Are you a Budding Internet Radio DJ? Starting out doing Internetradio as a hobby can seem daunting at first but when you get used to streaming it can be a great hobby to have. If you're a Budding Radio DJ and are looking to get started then may I suggest a few pieces of software to use that won't cost you a penny. In order to start streaming on the internet you will need the following... 1) A decent computer with a decent processor and at least 2GB RAM. Plus an operating system LATER than Windows Vista. 2) A decent music collection (at least 2000 tracks) make sure you use mp3 files ripped at 320Kbps (CBR) or FLAC if you have the disk space. 3) A decent broadband connection minimum of 2MB per second upload speed. 4) A decent radio automation program. We recommend RadioDJ FREE radio playout software for this. How To Install RadioDJ 5) A decent encoding program. In order to stream to a Shoutcast or Icecast server you will need an enco

Beware Of Free Radio Automation Software?

Image
@Spacial Audio have written a blog post about choosing the right software for running a radio station with. When it came to free radio automation software they said this. Beware of Free Radio Automation Software, Free software can often come at a higher cost in the long run, with hidden fees and complex contracts that can be costly if you don't foresee them. What planet are you on Spacial Audio? Because it sure isn't Earth... Calling occupants of interplantery craft. When it comes to FREE radio software such as RadioDJ there are NO complex contracts or ONLINE activations required. No contracts - No catches – No keys – No hidden fees – No activations – No gimmicks Being free Radio DJ also doesn't require registration keys in order to unlock the benefits of the program. Genuinely free software sometimes does not deliver on expectations, from poor performance to a lack of support when things go wrong. OH How Wrong You Are! Radio

SAM Broadcaster Freezes While Adding Music?

Image
I first used SAM Broadcaster way back when v1.3 came out in 1999. One thing that bugged me about SAM Broadcaster is that it always FROZE while adding music into the software. Adding files is a very time consuming process and SAM freezes for a while. When a track is playing it wont transition to the next song until the folder scan is done. Back in v1.3 If I tried adding a large folder of music to the software it would cause the program to crash. It was exactly the same with versions 2/3/4. The reason SAM freezes while you try to do things is down to the fact that the software suffers from bad memory leaks. Plus the software is well known for using lots of the computers resources & CPU. SADLY 20+ years later the same thing is still happening in Spacial Audio's SAM Broadcaster software. Saw this on Social media recently. I'm making headway adding music & jingles to SAM but it k

Does Anyone Still Buy SAM Broadcaster Pro?

Image
I'm not noticing anywhere near the amount of gripes about SAM Broadcaster on social media that I used to see 5/6 years ago. The forums don't seem to be attracting as many complaints that they once did either. Download figures for RadioDJ would suggest that not many people are paying Spacial Audio for software now. Its coming on 10 years since I switched from SAM Broadcaster to RadioDJ. I switched because I was sick of SAMBC not performing as it should & it crashed regularly and required reinstalling everytime. I have NEVER and I repeat NEVER had a major issue with RadioDJ or any stand alone encoders I've streamed with. Whereas I had no end of BUFFERING with SAM Broadcasters encoders. If anything has taken the computer off air its been computer hardware related. Disc Drives FAILING were the main cuprit. RadioDJ just seems to run and run and run its as stable as anything The best thing ab

RadioDJ Stream Title Settings

Image
In RadioDJ free radio automation software you have the ability to control what metadata the listener sees when a song, request or jingle plays. We regularly get people asking how they can hide the artist & title of a Jingle or track form showing in the stream. Look under Options>Options>Stream Titles: This is where the magic happens. You have various track types in RadioDJ Music = 0 Jingle = 1 Sweeper = 2 Voiceover = 3 Commercial = 4 InternetStream = 5 Other = 6 VDF = 7 Podcast = 8 Request = 9 News = 10 PlaylistEvent = 11 FileByDate = 12 NewestFromFolder = 13 Teaser = 14 In order to show the information you want to show you need to select the track type and configure what information you want displaying that track type plays. These are some of the Variables you can find the full list of stream variables inside the Docs folder in RadioDJv2 by opening a .pdf file $track_id$ = Track's Database ID $artist$ = Track Artist $title$ = Track Title $album$ = Track A

RadioDJ Online Requests

Image
Did You know: RadioDJ has the ability to take listener requests online? I thought I would do a short tutorial on how to setup RadioDJ Online Requests. To get the request system working with RadioDJ you need to do the following. 1) Make sure you have RadioDJ installed. How To Install RadioDJ Tip: When setting MySQL up choose a strong password with lots of number and symbols and & make sure you write it down! 2) Create a new MySQL user that isn't "root" You can find out how to do that HERE Please try not to use root for requests it won't be as secure. 3) Place the Plugin_Requests.dll and .xml file in the plugin folder within RadioDJ. (The files can be found in the disabled plugins folder) 4) Download the RadioDJ Request website scripts from the forum. Note: These scripts are intended as a pointer for you to build your site around. 5) Make sure your website host/server host allows connections on the required MySQL connection port

Totally Free Radio DJ Music Automation Software

Image
This was a search made on Google because its shown up in Analytics: Totally Free Radio DJ Music Automation Software So you want some totally FREE radio playout software? Well step this way... The main piece of radio automation software I recommend is RadioDJ RadioDJ has been developed for over 10 years now and has been FREE since it was first released. Radio DJ is free is because the author wanted to help hobby broadcasters get their station on air without having to spend $$$ on software. RadioDJ has since gone on to be used by professional (AM/FM) radio stations who use it for their stations music output. Despite what other radio automation software developers might say RadioDJ doesn't need any marketing gimmicks the software speaks for itself. One user reported an amazing uptime with RadioDJ recently they had v1.8.2 running for 4 years on a laptop. Radio DJ is easy enough to setup & if all goes to plan you should be up and running in under an hour

Create Your Own DIY Radio Station For FREE

Image
Have you ever fancied creating your own online DIY radio station? Its not as difficult as you might think and is really easy to setup. What do you actually need to create an online radio station? Broadband with a decent upload speed (Min 2MB second) A mixing desk and microphone Music collection with minimum of 2500 tracks Decent radio playout software You can pick microphones and mixing desks cheap on sites like eBay I paid around £90 for my mixer and around £50-60 on a microphone. You need to route the microphone through a mixing desk into the line-in usually the (blue socket) on your soundcard input. Use software such as Voicemeeter to route your voice through to the stand alone encoding software. Next you'll be wanting some radio automation software to spin your tunes with, for this we recommend RadioDJ RadioDJ runs on .NET (At least 3.5 & 4.6.1) and a MYSQL server & is tested working on most versions of Windows (7/8/10) Note: .NET 4.6.1 will not

I Don't Have To Lift A Finger (RadioDJ FREE Radio Playout)

Image
One of the GREAT things about RadioDJ is once you have your automation setup you may just find you don't have to touch things. I can switch RadioDJ onto Auto DJ press play and rotations and events do the rest. I have Jingles loading by event, I load different rotations at different times of day also via events. RadioDJ will make your Internet radio station more streamlined and because its better programmed you won't need to keep an eye on things. One user had an uptime of 4 years and he didn't have to touch or look at Radio DJ he just left it running. Sadly I could never get this sort of stabilty from other well known radio automation software. I was lucky to get a few hours uptime let alone days with other software it would crash and take the database with it. Some of the credit needs to go to MariaDB without it I wouldn't have a stable database. It was 2014 when I last rebui

Stop It With Your Tantrums (We've Had Enough)

Image
Theres a user on the Internet radio forums that appears to be out of their depth when it comes to coding websites & its PAINFUL to watch. The user concerned has been trolling most of the Internet radio forums for the past few years, If they're told sorry you may need to pay someone to do that or they get ignored they always respond by throwing their toys out of the pram. Aliases include: Strawbs89, Ultra89, Lolly200, djaubs89, Streaminglad.  I've witnessed them on several radio forums and its always the same response (ABUSE) if they think they are being hard done to. Their Bio on one broadcasting forum says this: I am an online Radio DJ, I am A Computer Wizz Kid.  Wait You're WHAT? You're a computer whizz kid? Since when? If this user was a computer whizz kid they wouldn't be constantly asking the same banal questions over and over again. I've seen the state of several radio websites this user has coded in the past and the pages look

MySQL 8 Problems (RadioDJ)

Image
Over the past year or so I've seen LOTS of people having issues with MySQL 8 and RadioDJ. Which has now lead Marius to post about using RadioDJ with MySQL 8 Marius carried out out some tests and its quite clear that MySQL 8 takes longer to process queries compared to MariaDB. Query Duration MariaDB: 0.0081946 seconds Query Duration MySQL8: 1.7712764 seconds As you can see the difference is huge on MySQL it takes almost 2 seconds just to run a single query. I found MySQL 8 to be bloated when it came to installing it to test it. There were far too many options to setup MySQL8. Whereas MariaDB is simpler to install and not so bloated. We've used MariaDB since 2014 and it performs 100% better than Oracle MySQL ever did. Its rare for MariaDB databases to crash I've not had to run a repair in quite some time. If you are using MySQL8 and you're having issues with RadioDJ, Backup your database and then Uninstall MySQL

How To: Connect RadioDJ to Shoutcast or Icecast

Image
To connect RadioDJ to Shoutcast or Icecast you need a stand alone encoder. Setting up a stand alone encoder is NO MORE DIFFCULT than configuring a built in one. 1) Install the standalone encoder of your choice. 2) Configure the stand alone encoder software to take the audio from your soundcard. TIP: If you don't have a physical sound card then you can use Virtual Audio Cables 3) Configure Your encoder(s) to connect to Shoutcast or Icecast. 4) Connect to the server and et voila you should have audio streaming from RadioDJ to your audio server. 5) RadioDJ outputs now playing info to a text file (e.g: C:\RadioDJv2\NowPlaying.txt) you can connect most stand alone encoders to that text file so your listeners then know what you are playing. Its really NOT that difficult to stream on the Internet these days. Free Shoutcast and Icecast services can be found by searching the Internet

Running RadioDJ On Linux/Wine?

Image
This is a common question we've seen on the RadioDJ forums. Q: Will RadioDJ free radio automation software run under .wine on Linux? A:  Not at present and yes you can quote me on that! Don't believe us then feel free to test the theory out at your own risk! The tests have been carried out on both 64bit and 32bit installs of Wine on different versions of Ubuntu Studio. If you get .NET installed under WINE there is still no guarantee RadioDJ will work properly on Linux. RadioDJ v2.x.x.x requires at least .NET 3.5 and 4.6 Even IF the database setup tool runs and you get RadioDJ fired up the program may not function and will constantly throw up errors at you. This is what happened last time I tried running RadioDJ under .wine I used to try every couple of months usually when I saw an update for .wine & MONO and got the same error messages everytime. I tested again recently and couldn't even get Wine/Winetricks to install correctly on an 64bit
