My Favourite RadioDJ Feature?

Image
I've been a RadioDJ user since late 2010 after I discovered the software via a Google search. I've seen RadioDJ slowly gain popularity since 2013 & lot of users are beginning to realise how GOOD it is. If I was asked to say what my favourite feature in RadioDJ was I'd have to think about it. RadioDJ is FEATURE PACKED and has a lot more functionality than other radio automation that you can pay $$$ for. However after a lot of thought I think this is my favourite feature in RadioDJ: Custom Track Rotations which can be loaded anytime by operator or by programmed event I've NEVER had a Track Rotation Fail in RadioDJ I frequently had problems with AutoDJ with other radio playout software If you know how to program MySQL you can load tracks in the queue via SQL Query. The AutoDJ Rotation loads the Music easily and fast into the queue in RDJ. You can programme RadioDJ to have different

25 Years Of Being Into Internet Radio (1999-2024)

Image
Its dawned on me I've been into Internet radio since 1999. It all started with me using a friends computer and I tuned into a LIVE365 station. Cyndi Lauper All Through The Night was the first song I heard on the stream It was 2001 before I was able to afford my first computer and I set about learning How To Stream on the Internet. I've lost count of how many different bits of software I've tried in 25 years some of them were GREAT some of them were PANTS Oddcast, Edcast, Altacast, Jazler, MB Recaster, BUTT, Zara Radio, SAM Broadcaster & Winamp with DSP Encoders Early versions of certain software would Crash if you tried adding a large folder of music to it. Some software just didn't have great stability which was Sad because the software looked promising. I lost a position on an Internet radio station because of software issues. I spent a LOT of time FIGHTING with software just t

Radio DJ v2.0.0.6 THOUSANDS Of Downloads

Image
I checked the Download figures on the RadioDJ website recently. To say I was slightly taken aback would be an understatement I noticed that RadioDJ v2.0.0.6 had been downloaded 260,072 times & that blew me away. Now tell me RadioDJ isn't the Hottest Property on the Automation market right now I know from watching videos that RadioDJ is being used by some pretty BIG radio stations out there. Of course RadioDJ is going to be popular because its amazingly stable and RELIABLE. Lots of people are learning that RadioDJ is better than paid for radio automation suites which don't always work as advertised. Marius Vaida has anyone ever told you YOU'RE A GENIUS? Little wonder certain software companies are cutting back on their support staff. RadioDJ is the Future of Radio Automation

Internet Radio Listeners Can Be So FICKLE

Image
When it comes to Internet radio the hardest thing a radio station owner can do is try and attract listeners to their stream. I found in the past when I was streaming that most listeners only tended to tune in for 1 maybe 2 songs. I would play 2 Classic 80s songs together and then I'd lose a few listeners If those listeners heard those two songs played together on mainstream 80s radio those people would think the DJ was amazing. There is no DJ on most mainstream radio stations most of its Voice tracked, Computerised & Networked from remote Studios. Sadly it seems despite Internetradio station owners promoting their stations people only want to hear what they want to HEAR. Internet radio is losing out big style to Streaming services such as Spotify Spotify wants to KILL Internet Radio as we know it! Yes its nice when you do get listeners sticking around bu

Blogging For Over 10 Years

Image
Looking at my old website on Wayback Machine its made me realise its over 10 years since I started blogging. I started my blog in 2011 to get a few things off my chest that I couldn't say on forums. Mainly about software malfunctioning and other general annoyances in the world of Online Radio. I've been into Internet radio since I first tuned into a LIVE365 Station way back in 1999. In all those years I've been shocked by just how awful MOST of the paid for radio automation playout solutions actually are. I've had no end of headaches when I've paid for radio automation software in the past. Getting support for paid for software was an absolute nightmare with some online radio software companies. Some pieces of software were easy to use and others were downright awkward/difficult to use. I never got great uptime from software such as SAM Broadcaster or Zararadio they would crash when I lea

Why Is It Wrong to Have An Opinion? (Internet Radio Forums)

Image
I keep getting hassle for my views about RadioDJ FREE radio playout software. When will you start to giving independent advice instead of giving the same old opinion everytime someone asks a question about a playout system I'm getting really really TIRED of people spouting BILE at me on forums about my meerest mention of RadioDJ. I suggest RadioDJ as an alternative to other (Badly Coded) automation solutions and there are lots of awful playout solutions. Its NOT my fault paid for radio playout solutions such as SAM Broadcaster Pro don't work as advertised IS IT? NO the fault lies with the often LAZY software developers programming badly coded radio playout software solutions I've paid for software & then found it didn't work and then I've ran into a brick wall when trying to get a refund. We DO NOT offer refunds because of our 14-day free trial version, which allows users to try the product for free and make sure they are sa

Zararadio Why Bother?

Image
Zara Radio Free Version: Why Bother? This is another piece of radio software that I tried to use before I discovered the benefits of RadioDJ I had to switch to another program Zararadio would crash after 20hrs of use Zararadio was another piece of software I couldn't get to work properly. Even after RTFM The crossfading was awful & I would always end up with lots of dead air between songs. The sound quality was poor with some songs sounding distorted even though they sounded OK on other players. It would frequently repeat songs & artists as it didn't have any playlist rotation rules built in. It wasn't much kop when it came to leaving it unattended to automate my music. I would wake up and look at the PC to find it wouldn't be playing anything. You could never call Zara radio professional radio software It's a horrid piece of software to even try and run a radio stream with. Infact we'd go as far as saying Zararadio is nothing more tha

Why Do I Only Promote FREE Radio Software?

Image
Q: Why do I only promote free radio software from this blog site? In my own experience when I've paid $$$ for software in the past I've ran into issues that stopped me in my tracks. Users like me paid hundreds $$$ for radio automation software & found the support sucked for those pieces of software Some software companies seem to plod on year after year not updating their software all the while still taking paying customers money. Spacial Audio are the biggest Cowboys when it comes to customer support You only have to search this blog to find that one out Lack of customer support is one huge reason I hate paying for software. Another is when Vendors/Authors of software suddenly disappear off the face of the Earth and then their software becomes obsolete. I find some FREE software can be absolutley Amazing sometimes. FREE SOFTWARE is my favourite sort of software because it comes to you

Budding InternetRadio DJ?

Image
Q: Are you a Budding Internet Radio DJ? Starting out doing Internetradio as a hobby can seem daunting at first but when you get used to streaming it can be a great hobby to have. If you're a Budding Radio DJ and are looking to get started then may I suggest a few pieces of software to use that won't cost you a penny. In order to start streaming on the internet you will need the following... Broadband connection with minimum of 2MB per second upload speed 1 Music collection with at least 2000 tracks, make sure you use properly ripped audio files at 320Kbps (CBR) mp3 or FLAC A decent computer with a decent processor and at least 2GB RAM. Plus an operating system LATER than Windows Vista. A decent radio automation program. We recommend RadioDJ FREE radio playout software for this. 1 You may encounter issues if other members of your household are streaming TV/Movies at the same time. Reasons to Use RadioDJ:

People should be able to listen to your stream if you

I Don't Have To Lift A Finger (RadioDJ FREE Radio Playout)

Image
One of the GREAT things about RadioDJ is once you have your automation setup you may just find you don't have to touch things. I can switch RadioDJ onto Auto DJ press play and rotations and events do the rest. You can have Jingles & Playlists loading by event, You can also load different rotations at different times of day also via an event. RadioDJ will make your radio station more streamlined and because its better programmed you won't need to keep an eye on things. One user had an uptime of 4 years with RadioDJ 1.8.2 Sadly I could never get this sort of stabilty from other well known radio automation software. I was lucky to get a few hours uptime let alone days with other radio playout software. One of the pieces of software would crash and take the database with it. Some of the credit needs to go to MariaDB without it I wouldn't have a stable database.

How To Get Listed On Icecast And Internetradio

Image
I went for a look on the Icecast forums and found some really useful information on How To Get Listed on Icecast. I had my stream up and running but it wasn't listing us on the Icecast directory. I've written a short guide to how you get listed on Icecast and InternetRadio. First you need to find this line in the configuration file <hostname>localhost</hostname> Where it says localhost you need to put either the IP or web address where your Icecast server is running from. (e.g: djgar.icecastserver.com or 216.136.201.105) If all goes to plan you should see "yp_currently_playing" in your Icecast admin which then in turn means you are listed publicly on the Icecast YP. If that fails you need to make sure your directory listing tags look like this <directory> <yp-url-timeout>15</yp-url-timeout> <yp-url>http://dir.xiph.org/cgi-bin/yp-cgi</yp-url> </directory> Als

RadioDJ & AAC+ Streams

Image
A user on the forums was having issues getting an AAC+ Internet stream to play in RadioDJ. RadioDJ doesn't natively come bundled with the Bass AAC codec as it would cost Marius a lot of money to include that codec in his software. HOWEVER: You can play AAC+ streams in RadioDJ if you download the BASS AAC codec yourself from http://un4seen.com/ Unzip the folder. Close RadioDJ & place the bass_aac.dll file inside the bass_plugins folder inside the RadioDJ folder. Restart RadioDJ and you should now be able to playback AAC+ streams. That is literally ALL there is to it.

Spotify Killed The Radio Star?

Image
This past few years has seen a rise in the big music streaming services such as Deezer, Amazon Music & Spotify etc. There's to much competition from services like Spotify Pandora and Deezer and they are slowly killing Internet radio. One station owner had this to say: Over the last 3 years my listeners have dropped off to almost nothing I have promoted my station lots on social media. Internetradio gets beaten on all fronts, if isn't the rise of the streaming services, it's the royalties pricing pushing stations offline. There's just been a rise in the amount of royalties paid by Internet radio stations and it has forced lots of stations to go off air. The licencing agencies want to drive broadcasters out of the market by demanding more for Royalties. Internet radio station owners keep getting screwed over time and again when it comes to royalty payment agencies It emerged a few years back that a provider called Loudcity hadn't been paying the ri

Real DJs don't use Winamp

Image
Saw a topic a topic on the Winamp forums where someone said they were using Winamp to DJ at parties. OMG! Are you seriously attempting to use Winamp To DJ with? Man I bet your DJ sets suck the life and soul out of a party! Another user replied to the post with this: Real DJs don't use Winamp to DJ it doesn't crossfade properly Indeed DJ's don't use Winamp to produce mixes or radio shows. We use other software that is built for the job. I attempted to use Winamp over 20 years ago There wasn't much choice of radio playout software and it just didn't do the job I wanted it to do. I would regularly hear it repeating artists & songs, The crossfading between tracks in Winamp was just awful. I'd end up with dead air of around 3-5 seconds between tracks. SAM Broadcaster didn't fare much better... But that's another story. Winamp is only any good as a media player for listening to Shoutcast streams. While Winamp m
