25 Years Of Being Into Internet Radio (1999-2024)

Image
Its dawned on me I've been into Internet radio since 1999. It all started with me using a friends computer and I tuned into a LIVE365 station. Cyndi Lauper All Through The Night was the first song I heard on the stream It was 2001 before I was able to afford my first computer and I set about learning How To Stream on the Internet. I've lost count of how many different bits of software I've tried in 25 years some of them were GREAT some of them were PANTS Oddcast, Edcast, Altacast, Jazler, MB Recaster, BUTT, Zara Radio, SAM Broadcaster & Winamp with DSP Encoders Early versions of certain software would Crash if you tried adding a large folder of music to it. Some software just didn't have great stability which was Sad because the software looked promising. I lost a position on an Internet radio station because of software issues. I spent a LOT of time FIGHTING with software just t

RadioDJ Has Come A Long Way in 10 Years

Image
Recently been sorting through photos on my computer so I could back them up to Google Drive. While going through one folder I saw this screenshot I took in 2013. I hadn't realised that it was 10 years ago that we started testing RadioDJ v1.6.3.2 one of the the first versions to use plugins. It was like a new piece of software written from the ground up by Marius. Every version has worked better than expected and the software is now much more powerful and streamlined than it was. RadioDJ now has a HUGE following and every person I speak to using the software speaks FONDLY of it. You'll notice there's hardly any Negative reviews about RadioDJ thats because its a piece of software that does what it was designed for. RadioDJ Automation Software is so feature packed it puts OTHER radio playout software in the SHADE You can see the History of the RadioDJ versions HERE

How To: Start Your Own Internet Radio Station

Image
Have you ever wondered how to start your own online Internetradio station? Its not as difficult as you'd think...To run a radio station online you need the following. A decent broadband connection minimum of 2MB upload speed A decent spec desktop computer with a decent processor 1Ghz+ & 1GB RAM will do the job. A varied and large music collection a collection of around 2500+ songs usually helps. Decent automation software you can pick some up for free. A Shoutcast or Icecast server. A mixer and a decent microphone. If your current computer isn't up to the job of streaming 24/7 then you need to invest in a new(ish) computer. You should be able to pickup a decent computer with a decent specification cheap enough from places like eBay. You'll be needing a decent radio music automation program we highly recommend RadioDJ radio playout software for this. Reasons to Use RadioDJ:

Internet Radio Listeners Can Be So FICKLE

Image
When it comes to Internet radio the hardest thing a radio station owner can do is try and attract listeners to their stream. I found in the past when I was streaming that most listeners only tended to tune in for 1 maybe 2 songs. I would play 2 Classic 80s songs together and then I'd lose a few listeners If those listeners heard those two songs played together on mainstream 80s radio those people would think the DJ was amazing. There is no DJ on most mainstream radio stations most of its Voice tracked, Computerised & Networked from remote Studios. Sadly it seems despite Internetradio station owners promoting their stations people only want to hear what they want to HEAR. Internet radio is losing out big style to Streaming services such as Spotify Spotify wants to KILL Internet Radio as we know it! Yes its nice when you do get listeners sticking around bu

Blogging For Over 10 Years

Image
Looking at my old website on Wayback Machine its made me realise its over 10 years since I started blogging. I started my blog in 2011 to get a few things off my chest that I couldn't say on forums. Mainly about software malfunctioning and other general annoyances in the world of Online Radio. I've been into Internet radio since I first tuned into a LIVE365 Station way back in 1999. In all those years I've been shocked by just how awful MOST of the paid for radio automation playout solutions actually are. I've had no end of headaches when I've paid for radio automation software in the past. Getting support for paid for software was an absolute nightmare with some online radio software companies. Some pieces of software were easy to use and others were downright awkward/difficult to use. I never got great uptime from software such as SAM Broadcaster or Zararadio they would crash when I lea

Why Is It Wrong to Have An Opinion? (Internet Radio Forums)

Image
I keep getting hassle for my views about RadioDJ FREE radio playout software. When will you start to giving independent advice instead of giving the same old opinion everytime someone asks a question about a playout system I'm getting really really TIRED of people spouting BILE at me on forums about my meerest mention of RadioDJ. I suggest RadioDJ as an alternative to other (Badly Coded) automation solutions and there are lots of awful playout solutions. Its NOT my fault paid for radio playout solutions such as SAM Broadcaster Pro don't work as advertised IS IT? NO the fault lies with the often LAZY software developers programming badly coded radio playout software solutions I've paid for software & then found it didn't work and then I've ran into a brick wall when trying to get a refund. We DO NOT offer refunds because of our 14-day free trial version, which allows users to try the product for free and make sure they are sa

Zararadio Why Bother?

Image
Zara Radio Free Version: Why Bother? This is another piece of radio software that I tried to use before I discovered the benefits of RadioDJ I had to switch to another program Zararadio would crash after 20hrs of use Zararadio was another piece of software I couldn't get to work properly. Even after RTFM The crossfading was awful & I would always end up with lots of dead air between songs. The sound quality was poor with some songs sounding distorted even though they sounded OK on other players. It would frequently repeat songs & artists as it didn't have any playlist rotation rules built in. It wasn't much kop when it came to leaving it unattended to automate my music. I would wake up and look at the PC to find it wouldn't be playing anything. You could never call Zara radio professional radio software It's a horrid piece of software to even try and run a radio stream with. Infact we'd go as far as saying Zararadio is nothing more tha

Budding InternetRadio DJ?

Image
Q: Are you a Budding Internet Radio DJ? Starting out doing Internetradio as a hobby can seem daunting at first but when you get used to streaming it can be a great hobby to have. If you're a Budding Radio DJ and are looking to get started then may I suggest a few pieces of software to use that won't cost you a penny. In order to start streaming on the internet you will need the following... Broadband connection with minimum of 2MB per second upload speed 1 Music collection with at least 2000 tracks, make sure you use properly ripped audio files at 320Kbps (CBR) mp3 or FLAC A decent computer with a decent processor and at least 2GB RAM. Plus an operating system LATER than Windows Vista. A decent radio automation program. We recommend RadioDJ FREE radio playout software for this. 1 You may encounter issues if other members of your household are streaming TV/Movies at the same time. Reasons to Use RadioDJ:

How To: Install RadioDJ FREE Radio Playout Software

Image
Installing RadioDJ the easy way... I know it can be daunting and scary installing radio automation software for the first time. I knew nothing about working a Database 23 years ago. Now I can take care of a Database with no issues Mind I learned the Hard way. If you aren't used to using software that requires a database don't panic it's not as difficult to setup as you might think. Tip: Try NOT to use MySQL8 its Buggy and Unpredictable users have had issues with it alongside RadioDJ If you follow these easy steps and have a bit of patience then you should have the program up and running in no time. Why choose RadioDJ Free Radio Automation Software? RadioDJ is 100% FREE and has ZERO restrictions RadioDJ doesn't require online activations or registrations Once installed it's stable and works for days/weeks/months without needing to keep an eye on it Great Music library support add as many

Using Winamp To Automate A Radio Station?

Image
I saw a topic on the Winamp forums from a user wanting to use Winamp to automate the music for their radio station. Do I need a plugin to make playlists so it operates 24 hours? If so which plugins are the best? I want Winamp to never stop, It will be used for a small radio station Fact: Winamp is only good for listening to online Shoutcast Radio stations or to play a few music tracks. Winamp is NOT suitable for automating an Internetradio station Listeners expect high standards from streaming media these days You don't have any artist/title/album separation rules in Winamp So you're just going to hear the same songs/artists/tracks over and over. I certainly never found a way to stop tracks and artists from repeating within the current Winamp playlist. You get lots of silence between tracks or car crash crossfades with Winamp . Having large gaps of silence between tracks isn't going to win many listener

RadioDJ And Its Magic Crossfade

Image
I'm sat here surfing the web & RadioDJ is playing away in the background doing amazing crossfades between songs and jingles. The crossfading in RadioDJ is just another reason to LOVE the software I'm happy I've found the most perfect piece of audio playback software. If only technology had been this advanced in the 1980s I wouldn't have a bad back from carrying boxes of Vinyl Most of the DJ automation software I tried out back in 1999/2000 was a nightmare to work with in all honesty Some of the DJ software offerings 20+ years ago were so bad they would would crash if you tried adding a large library of songs. I tried Winamp 2.9 and it was OK as a media player but wasn't ideal for doing DJ work with, Winamp struggled to crossfade smoothly between tracks even with the use of DSP Crossfading plugins. Then I discovered a program called MusicMatch Jukebox which at the time was the best audio player available. It had a reasona

Encoding Software (Standalone Encoders)

Image
To get your stream online its easier if you use a standalone encoding solution Its not difficult to use a stand alone encoder. You configure it the same as a built in one. The MYTH that a standalone encoder is harder to use is put out by software developers who include built in encoders in their software A Standalone encoder picks up the audio from Stereo Mix or Virtual Audio Cable. I've yet to see built in encoders function properly in some software, I frequently encountered lots of buffering messages. Using stand alone encoding means RadioDJ can be left to do what its does best AUTOMATING your songs and jingles. I've used the standalone encoding method since I discovered RadioDJ in 2010 Standalone Encoders are more reliable I've NOT had an issue with Stand Alone encoding software while streaming. Here are just some of the free Internet radio streaming encoders available. 1) Sound Empire Caster ($0.00)

How To Get Listed On Icecast And Internetradio

Image
I went for a look on the Icecast forums and found some really useful information on How To Get Listed on Icecast. I had my stream up and running but it wasn't listing us on the Icecast directory. I've written a short guide to how you get listed on Icecast and InternetRadio. First you need to find this line in the configuration file <hostname>localhost</hostname> Where it says localhost you need to put either the IP or web address where your Icecast server is running from. (e.g: djgar.icecastserver.com or 216.136.201.105) If all goes to plan you should see "yp_currently_playing" in your Icecast admin which then in turn means you are listed publicly on the Icecast YP. If that fails you need to make sure your directory listing tags look like this <directory> <yp-url-timeout>15</yp-url-timeout> <yp-url>http://dir.xiph.org/cgi-bin/yp-cgi</yp-url> </directory> Als

RadioDJ & AAC+ Streams

Image
A user on the forums was having issues getting an AAC+ Internet stream to play in RadioDJ. RadioDJ doesn't natively come bundled with the Bass AAC codec as it would cost Marius a lot of money to include that codec in his software. HOWEVER: You can play AAC+ streams in RadioDJ if you download the BASS AAC codec yourself from http://un4seen.com/ Unzip the folder. Close RadioDJ & place the bass_aac.dll file inside the bass_plugins folder inside the RadioDJ folder. Restart RadioDJ and you should now be able to playback AAC+ streams. That is literally ALL there is to it.

Can I Transmit Live From Outside Using RadioDJ?

Image
This is a question that gets asked quite often on the RadioDJ forums. Q: Can you transmit a show from a remote location. A: Quite easily with the right tools. Its possible to broadcast from an outside location (OB: Outside Broadcast) using a Laptop RadioDJ and a standalone encoder Its really not that much different to broadcasting from a studio/bedroom and thanks to leaps and bounds in technology it should be perfectly simple to get your live outside broadcast on air. You stream audio as usual to your server using a 4G connection or Wi-Fi at your location Thats If the Wi-Fi signal supports streaming Otherwise you will need access to an Ethernet port. Take your time and work to minimise gremlins in the system before going ahead with the Outside Broadcast It will pay dividends with the quality of your broadcast. If you're still nervous about the outside broadcast not working take a few deep breaths... I'm sure it will all work out in the end. P.S:

Set Up An Internet Radio Station For Free? (Sam Broadcaster Pro)

Image
I saw a tweet on Twitter recently saying this: Q: Can I set up an Internet Radio Station for free with SAM Broadcaster Pro A: You CANNOT setup an Internet radio station for FREE with SAM Broadcaster SAM Broadcaster Pro costs $299 & the Studio version costs $699 Even after you've paid Spacial Audio all that money for SAM Broadcaster Pro or Studio you only LEASE the software. A lease is a contract outlining terms under which one party agrees to rent property owned by another You never own Spacial Audio software outright Spacial Audio can tell you to STOP using their software at anytime There never has been such a beast as a free copy of SAM Broadcaster Pro Even SAM Broadcaster Cloud costs $30 per month or $330 annually. Radio DJ is a better 100% FREE alternative to SAM Broadcaster Pro Despite what other radio automation software developers may say in their blog posts. RadioDJ is available for FREE and anyone anywhere in the Universe can u

Spotify Killed The Radio Star?

Image
This past few years has seen a rise in the big music streaming services such as Deezer, Amazon Music & Spotify etc. There's to much competition from services like Spotify Pandora and Deezer and they are slowly killing Internet radio. One station owner had this to say: Over the last 3 years my listeners have dropped off to almost nothing I have promoted my station lots on social media. Internetradio gets beaten on all fronts, if isn't the rise of the streaming services, it's the royalties pricing pushing stations offline. There's just been a rise in the amount of royalties paid by Internet radio stations and it has forced lots of stations to go off air. The licencing agencies want to drive broadcasters out of the market by demanding more for Royalties. Internet radio station owners keep getting screwed over time and again when it comes to royalty payment agencies It emerged a few years back that a provider called Loudcity hadn't been paying the ri
